What Color is your Parachute blog week 1

It is a common rumor to hear that robots are taking over the job market, or all humans that have a job will soon be replaced by robots. Although this has some truth, it is not the whole story. Yes some jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence, however a majority of the jobs being replaced will still need a human companion.

So now that we know not all jobs are being taken over by robots, such a relief, we can start to talk about what you can do to increase your odds of being picked for a job. In the book by Richard N. Bolles, What Color is your Parachute, (here on Amazon) there are many tips and tricks to help you hold your own in the big scary job market.
To get every tip you will have to read the book, which I highly recommend (I’m about halfway through it now), but some of the most interesting takeaways I got from the first chapter are here:

  1. Hunting for jobs is no longer about being the most qualified, it’s about knowing how to hunt for a job.

  2. Keep in mind who you are talking with during the interview process and be mindful of what you say. Interviews are a tool of elimination, so don’t say anything that would make you anything less than the best.

  3. There are certain things that need to be answered even though the employer will not come out and say it. Such as, what sets you apart, are you a good person (or a person who will fit in this workplace community), and why did you pick this place rather than another similar place.

  4. The final important reminder I got from this chapter is every time someone says NO, you are one more NO closer to a YES.
